Hawkeye Sewer & Drain
4532 Oak Crest Hill Rd SE, Iowa City, IA 52240, USA
(319) 337-7252Billy came within a few hours of my phone call and resolved the clogged drain quickly. Appreciated the efficiency and the low cost of service! He also handed me a handy tip sheet for how to avoid further clogs.
4 months agoHad an emergency kitchen sink, Garbage disposal, dishwasher drain clog(Meat). Quick service. Friendly. Very fair price. Checked inside and Out for leaks. Billy was great! Saved my weekend. Highly recommend!
7 months agoI’m a little conflicted about how to rate. The initial problem is fixed but he created a new problem by not reattaching a drain pipe properly on my clothes washer…. I ran the washer unknowingly and all the water poured onto the floor in areas where there was never water. I’m lucky I didn’t have anything in that area and the washer was not damaged, but I could’ve had important stuff there? It was very easy to put the pipe into the other pipe, so I’m sure it was an honest mistake but kind of unacceptable because of the damage it could’ve caused. With regards to the actual service, I called them and someone came within a few hours and he worked hard to get all the roots out of my main line. He was not forthcoming with info but was very knowledgeable at answering my questions when I asked. The basement was left with some dirt/sludge splattered around the access point and dirty water dripped up the stairs/landing as he took the machine out. But I think maybe that’s standard? It’s dirty work and I’d rather clean up myself then pay for more hours. I’d also rather have the clog cleared than keep it clean 😂

4 months agoBrian, Austin and Anthony did a fabulous job identifying and fixing a drainage problem in our home. Brian came out at 9:30 pm and stayed till 11:30 pm to make sure we were OK for the night. A major repair was needed and scheduled right away for us. Brian did a great job calming our nerves in such a stressful time. Turns out our 40 year old cast iron pipe had decayed and collapsed causing everything to back up into the house. Austin and Anthony did the repair efficiently and with much care to our property. The entire team was knowledgeable, hard working and professional. I highly recommend their services.
7 months agoZach and Max showed up on time and quickly identified a clog in my branch line and floor drain. They explained the root cause and resolved the clog efficiently. They explained the quote options without being pushy, then executed the work and provided video footage of the results, giving me confidence in their service. I'd recommend them.

537B Hwy 1 W, Iowa City, IA 52246, USA
(319) 354-2814Josh (the owner) personally came out and fixed a complex main valve/curb stop issue that other local shops refused to touch. He saved us from a massive excavation and did an AMAZING job. If you have a 1920s home, this is the only shop you should call! See before / after photos. New main value and secondary valve, removed and repalced rusty galvanized pipe.
3 months agoWe are and were always happy with the quality of work over the years BeaDay did for us. Be sure to ask for an estimate, though. We were shocked by the bill we received after their last work in our home.
3 months agoWorth the wait! Bea Day replaced our shower and were so incredibly kind and professional throughout the whole process. They gave us a very fair quote and were efficient and polite when it came time to do the actual work. We had to wait a few months until they could do the work, because they are so in demand, but it was well worth it. I highly recommend their team.

3305 Hwy 1 SW #22, Iowa City, IA 52240, USA
(319) 656-2728If I could give 0 stars I would. I had just gone through a year long fiasco getting a leak fixed and getting all of the repairs made at a house my daughter rents from my mother. The subcontractor had finally finished the vinyl floor and suggested I have a plumber inspect behind the fridge to make sure everything is fine so it wouldn't happen again. I made this clear to the person who scheduled the appointment and to whoever answered my inquiry online. I few days after the plumber left, I was made aware and was sent pictures that the floor had indents from when the fridge was pulled out. I called to let the plumbing office know. Immediately Michelle became defensive and argumentative. I offered to send her the pictures to which she said I could send them, but they wouldn't do anything about it since I didn't have proof. She made a comment about having pictures from the subcontractor which I said I could probably do since he had them. I got those and sent those to her, too, along with a text from the subcontractor saying the plumber should have known vinyl can be damaged and should have used a dolly. The next morning I receive an email back from Michelle telling me they aren't responsible for anything. We should have cleaned out the fridge to make it less heavy and refrigerators have wheels so they can be moved out (with many spelling and grammar mistakes may I add=not professional at all!). She also told me the plumber pulled the fridge out for less than 5 minutes. How do you do an inspection in less than 5 minutes and how does she know? Was she there? Stay far away from a shady company with a rude office manager who thinks blaming customers is good customer service! Oh my favorite part was when she ends the email with take care and stay healthy. ;)
1 year agoMy 75-yr-old mom needed a pressure relief valve replaced on her water heater. The service call went well and the plumber was very polite. She asked for a ballpark estimate and the plumber said he had no idea what it would cost despite it being a simple and common repair. A few days later my mom contacted me stating she received a bill for $400. The labor was $90 which is normal but the pressure relief valve was priced at $302. I had the same work done two years ago and the valve cost $30-40 with labor at $90 totaling $120. I called on a Monday and spoke with a polite woman that said she would have to speak with the plumber who did the install and she would try to get back to me within a couple of days. After two days and no response I called back and spoke with a polite man who said I would have to talk to the woman I talked to on Monday. I told him I already spoke with her and explained my concern about the cost of the valve. He said it didn't seem correct and he promised someone would contact me by the end of day. Didn't happen. I made a 3rd call the following morning and spoke with the same woman and she quickly made the correction to $44 for the valve. She said the plumber needed to be more specific on the write-up. I politely asked her if pressure relief valves ever cost $300 and she said yes, if they were for a boiler. The invoice clearly states it was for a water heater. I'll leave it up to the reader to determine if it was simply poor communication that resulted in a gross overcharge or if it was questionable conduct in an attempt to take advantage of an elderly lady.
1 year agoI had been a customer of Nelson's. I had an emergency Saturday and called their emergency number and no one called me back. I texted and called and never heard from them. I was able to get someone else to help me and avoided a disaster. An hour later, after I had gotten help elsewhere, I texted Nelson's and told them they didn't need to contact me. They should not advertise 24 hour emergency service if they do not provide it. I won't do business with them again.

4584 Rapid Creek Rd NE, Iowa City, IA 52240, USA
(319) 250-5442I called at 8:00 for a tub drain issue, and was able to get scheduled for an appointment the same day (two hours later)! Kim, the scheduler was very friendly and accommodating, giving me all the information I needed and answering my questions. My service technician, Hugh, was fantastic! I wanted to be an observer for the repair process, and he answered my many questions regarding various plumbing components in my home, many of which were unrelated to the issue I called about. I was able to add additional plumbing concerns for quick repairs on the spot, and Hugh was flexible with rolling with these additional fixes as part of the appointment. He always came back from the Ackerman van with a fix in hand! You get what you pay for - quality service and experience. Thank you, Hugh, for letting me be a part of the process! Happy customer, and I learned a lot!
4 months agoHugh was outstanding. He was efficient, knowledgeable, and clearly very experienced. He quickly fixed the plumbing issue and took the time to thoroughly check the system to make sure everything was safe and functioning properly. His attention to detail and professionalism gave me real peace of mind. I would absolutely recommend him and would not hesitate to call Ackerman plumbing again.
3 months agoVery happy to have been helped by Ackerman. We are new in town, saw that they were highly recommended, and called when we had a semi-urgent issue come up. They were able to see us and replace the water heater within a couple of hours of me calling. Thank you!

3 years agoProfessional Drain Cleaning in Iowa City, Iowa
Finding a reliable plumber in Iowa City shouldn't feel like a full-time job. Whether you are dealing with a backed-up sink in a historic home near the Northside or a main line issue in a newer development out west, you need a solution that works on your schedule. The challenge in Johnson County isn't just finding a plumber—it's finding one who actually has an opening today.
Our service revolutionizes how Iowa City residents handle plumbing emergencies. Instead of you calling down a list of names, we use our proprietary system to filter certified local experts by your exact zip code. We then take the extra step of calling them ourselves to verify their 24-hour availability. By the time you get a recommendation, you already know they are ready and able to head to your door.
Common Drain Issues in Iowa City, Iowa
Older infrastructure in Iowa City's historic districts often features clay or cast iron pipes. Over decades, these pipes become susceptible to tree root intrusion from the beautiful, mature oaks lining our streets, leading to recurring and stubborn sewer backups.
In high-density student housing and rental areas near the University of Iowa, drains frequently suffer from heavy usage and the buildup of 'fatbergs.' These are massive clogs caused by grease, oils, and non-flushable items that can cause sudden, messy overflows in multi-unit buildings.
Iowa City's water is known for its mineral content, which can lead to significant scale buildup inside your pipes. This hard water crust narrows the diameter of your drains over time, making it much easier for hair and soap scum to create a total blockage that requires professional descaling.
The shifting soil conditions common in the Iowa River valley can cause 'bellies' or low spots in residential sewer lines. These dips collect debris that eventually hardens, creating a persistent drainage problem that a standard plunger or grocery-store chemical cleaner simply cannot fix.
Seasonal Drain Maintenance Tips for Iowa City, Iowa
Spring Thaw Prep: As the ground thaws in Johnson County, ensure your basement floor drains are clear. Rising groundwater levels can put a strain on your system, and a clear drain is your best defense against seasonal flooding.
Tailgate Maintenance: During the Hawkeye football season, your kitchen sink works overtime. Avoid putting fibrous vegetables or grease down the disposal during your game-day prep to prevent a mid-party plumbing disaster.
Winter Pipe Protection: Iowa winters are notoriously harsh. Disconnect all outdoor hoses and insulate exposed pipes in crawlspaces to prevent freezing, which can lead to pipe bursts and major drainage failures when the temperature fluctuates.
Fall Leaf Debris: Before the first snow hits, clear out your exterior perimeter drains. Fallen leaves from Iowa City’s dense tree canopy can clog outdoor grates, leading to water pooling against your foundation and seeping into your plumbing system.
Average Drain Cleaning Costs in Iowa City, Iowa
The cost of drain cleaning in Iowa City varies based on the clog's location and severity. Simple sink snaking is typically on the lower end, while main sewer line hydro-jetting or root removal requires specialized equipment and higher labor costs.
